Swatch Superlot goes for an Insane 6 Million USD at Sotheby's Auction

On Tuesday all eyes were focused on the Sothebys auction of the “superlot”. This was a collection of over 25 years, featuring 5,800 Swatch and Art pieces being sold together. The winner was a European institution, claiming the win after over 30 bids with two other opponents in the bidding. The final price was a staggering USD $6 million. The original value was estimated at USD $1.3 million nearly 6 times the first estimate.

The seller was European collector Paul Dunkel. The Swatch & Art from the Dunkel Collection is the world's largest Swatch collection. Dunkel spent over 25 years working to get every model that Swatch produced since the creation of the brand. His extensive collection includes limited and special edition models, James Bond editions, prototypes, and other art that is connected with Swatch. These feature some of the rarest Swatch watches in the world.
Dunkel had mixed feelings about letting his collection into the hands of someone new. “I have been very happy and emotional to see the international interest in my collection over the past months. This is a true testament to the universal appeal of Swatch. Among the other art pieces and watches at this event lies a hidden gem. This gem is the Patek Philippe Pink Gold Minute Repeating Instantaneous Perpetual Calendar Tourbillon Wristwatch Ref 5207R.
